Final: Australia v England at Bridgetown

Posted by admin On May - 17 - 2010

ICC World Twenty20, Final: Australia v England at Bridgetown, May 16, 2010
Australia 147/6 (20/20 ov)
England 148/3 (17.0/20 ov)
England won by 7 wickets (with 18 balls remaining)

So, hugs, handshakes and backslaps all round as England have won their first world title in cricket! They were picked out as the dark horses to win this tournament, and after a stuttering, rain-affected start to the group stages, they hit their stride superbly in the Super Eights, winning all their games in that stage, followed by a thumping win in the semi-finals over Sri Lanka. The England dug-out leapt as one when the winning runs were hit, chasing their victorious captain down and quickly surrounding him in a joyous team huddle. The England celebrations will surely go on long into the night in Bridgetown.
Spare a thought for the Australians. They were the team to beat in this tournament, and England were the only ones to manage that feat! They were utterly dominant in the group stages and Super Eights. Their self belief and a magical innings from Michael Hussey powered them to a stunning win in the semi-final over Pakistan, but they have not been at their best today. England looked and played like the more professional side, and they are deserving champions.

India 163/5 (20/20 ov)

The entire Sri Lankan team charge onto the field, screaming in joy. Kumar Sangakkara can’t stop grinning. India trudge off without a single win in the Super Eights, just as in the previous World Twenty20.
It seemed Sri Lanka had left it for too late but a flurry of sixes from Mathews and Kapugedera has given them the win they needed. Sangakkara had played a crucial innings earlier, with his three sixes helping Sri Lanka stay in touch.

Group E: Pakistan v South Africa at Gros Islet

Posted by admin On May - 10 - 2010

ICC World Twenty20 – 21st match, Group E
Pakistan 148/7 (20/20 ov)
South Africa 137/7 (20.0/20 ov)
Pakistan won by 11 runs

Joy and sorrow collide. Pakistan players get into a celebratory huddle even as South African players look pretty downcast in the dressing room. It was another bizarrely mediocre performance from South Africa. There was no urgency in the chase; they meandered, stumbled, had an occasional burst of inspiration but for the major part they struggled.

Group F: West Indies v India at Bridgetown

Posted by admin On May - 9 - 2010

West Indies 169/6 (20/20 ov)
India 155/9 (20.0/20 ov)
West Indies won by 14 runs

So it’s all but over for India. If Sri Lanka win the next match, India will be out even before they go into their last game. If Australia win, India will stay alive, but will have to beat Sri Lanka on Tuesday and then hope that Australia beat West Indies, and also hope that their run-rate is ahead of WI’s. And West Indies, by the way, will be playing the second game. So it’s all stacked up against them. West Indies, though, have given themselves a great chance if they beat Australia on Tuesday. Thanks for joining us, do hop over to the other tab for the second match for today.

Sri Lanka 195/3 (20/20 ov)
West Indies 138/8 (20.0/20 ov)
Sri Lanka won by 57 runs

Mark from New Zealand: “Chat from Canada. There are some very experienced players in the West Indies side so have have to expect some criticism. And I’m sure what is being said on line will be nothing compared to the disappointment of their fans at home.”

196 was always going to be a tough target, and with Chanders and Gayle falling early, West Indies’ chances were very slim. That said, they need to sort out their team selection, a specialist batsman Hinds is wasted at No. 8. Sri Lanka have little to worry about after most thing s went right for them, Jayawardene nearing getting back-to-back centuries, Sangakkara finding form, and the bowling doing a professional job.

Steve, not surprising from the UK, conjectures: “THIS is what would have happened to the Windies had they faced a full 20 overs against England.”
